This week, we will explore the current state of the Web and how it plays into our everyday lives. We will discuss what his course will entail and what is expected of the students. We will also discuss various online resources that will be available for learning assistance.
State of the Web
Before we dive into any of the technical aspects of Web design, it will be good for us all to be on the same page in terms of where the Web stands in the world today. I’ve gathered several links below that should help us to grasp the enormity of the Web today as well as its exponential growth over the past 25 years
"State of the Internet"
This is a very short, entertaining animated infographic explaining some facts and figures about the sheer volume of Internet activity that takes place everyday and how truly the Web has become an integral part of the world as a whole. It may be a few years old, but the presentation is just awesome. You can assume that many of the numbers listed in the video are even more gargantuan.
"Did you know"
Another short, somewhat startling video explaining not only statistics about the internet, but also about the shifting direction of the worlds job market and economy.
"History of the Internet"
This animation gives a much more in-depth explanation of how the Internet came about as a result o the combination of 4 main networking systems.
"How Does the Internet Work?"
By now, pretty much everybody uses the Internet, but how many of us actually know how it works? This video explains a very broad overview of how it all is made possible.
Being a Web Designer
Now that we’ve wrapped our heads around the current state of the Web, let’s look over some articles on what thought processes and practices make a good, well-rounded, innovative Web designer.

This video gives a great overview of Web design. Don't worry if you don't understand all of the concepts touched in this video, we will go over them in more detail throughout the semester.

This article has more to do with the professional practices and mindset rather than specific skills. Becoming successful in the field of web design requires more than just having the right equipment or a wonderful grip on design. There are some very important things that any aspiring web designer should keep in mind when you’re building your professional repertoire.

Good design isn’t just about good looks, and nowhere is this truer than in web design. In fact it makes sense to think of web design as being made up of three major non-technical components: aesthetic design, information design and interface design. If you want to be a great web designer it’s essential that you have a firm grasp of all three.
